Publicado el 11 de septiembre de 1995, "The great escape" definió el Brit Pop, junto con su predecesor "Parklife", e incluyó los hit singles Country House’,  ‘The Universal’, ‘Stereotypes’ y ‘Charmless Man’. Con el paso de los años el disco se ha convertido en un clásico atemporal del pop británico de todos los tiempos y muestra al grupo de Damon Albarn en el mayor momento de gloria de su trayectoria.
